Neon + Black

I’ve never considered my personal sense of style to be too “edgy”. I have always preferred classic silhouettes and subdued colors. However, there is a certain je ne sais quoi about the color combination of neon and black. It’s bright. It’s bold. It’s daring. There is just enough edge and interest to elevate the ordinary to extraordinary.  The neon trend of today is quite a bit more refined and sophisticated than it’s 1980’s “neon overload” counterpart.  Neon is particularly powerful when incorporated as the statement piece of an outfit. I particularly love pairing either a neon blazer or neon pumps with a simple outfit (think black skinny pants and a white tee).

Have you jumped on the neon bandwagon yet? Maybe you will after viewing this gallery of neon inspiration.

There’s never been a better time to neon.

Something Unexpected: Fall Looks You’ll Love

Fall is just around the corner. Amidst all of the school supply shopping (hello colored pens and patterned notebooks!), take some time to get a refresh on your fall wardrobe. For a bit of a twist, these looks blur the lines between conventional and kooky for an “appropriate eclectic” idea. Even if you are not headed back to the classroom, these looks will still give you an “A+” around the office and around town.
——-
1. Alone, a white button-up is a yawn. Take this idea from from “snooze button” to “up and at ’em” by adding a bold pair of printed slacks and neon pumps. Office bore no more!
2. Demure and…daring? Add a neutral leather jacket to a floral skirt and loose tee (tucked in) for a “Sunday best meets Saturday night” vibe.
3. I am business woman, hear me roar. Two of the hottest trends: tiger tee shirts and the color emerald, can be blended seamlessly in this office chic look. The boldness of the tiger tee can be tamed for the office by adding a pair of black slim fit slacks and a structured, although colorful, blazer. This look will keep you on your toes, especially if you add metallic pumps.
Would you wear these looks to the office?

The Four Best Accessories. Ever.

Marilyn Monroe famously crooned “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend” in her aptly named hit. Are diamonds (real or fake) your best friend in the accessory realm? Would your grandmother’s pearls make the cut? How about your favorite leather tote? These next four accessories are so versatile that they easily deserve some shining stars of recognition.

1. Statement necklace: Pair your fanciest statement necklace with a worn vintage tee for a refreshing look.

2. Big rhinestone (or diamond) studs: Classy with a cocktail dress, button down, sweater, or tee shirt. Any garment is game to be paired with these earrings.

3. Skinny belt: Whether you cinch in a tunic or belt your jeans, skinny belts in a plethora of colors are the easiest way to emphasize your assets.

4. Crossbody satchel: If you don’t have one yet, get one! Crossbody purses are easily portable and convenient, and by far the best solution for a hands-free experience.

Sequins and Sparkles

If there is one part of the holidays that I love more than snow, peppermint hot chocolate, and Christmas carols…it has to be sequined clothing. Nothing says, “I’m here for the party!” than an outfit adorned with sequins, sequins, and more sequins. Why stand in, when you can stand out with the help of a little sparkle?? The holiday season is the perfect time to shine as bright as a lighted Christmas tree. Personally, I think that sequins are appropriate all year round. Sequined tanks, sequined shorts…even sequined blazers are available. If it has sequins, chances are I will be drawn to it faster than Santa Claus’ reindeer can take off on Christmas Eve. Just remember that unfortunately, it is possible to wear too many sequins. With head-to-toe sparkle, you will look more like a disco ball than the belle of the ball.

Sorry Heidi, but I will have to say “auf wiedersein” to this look.

I am in full support of sequined cocktail dresses, and other pieces with sequined accents such as shirts with sequined elbow patches and sequin paneled mini-skirts. When applying such sequined pizzazz to an outfit, remember to keep the other components somewhat simple. Opt for solid colors and minimal accessories. Think of sequins as the lead role, and accessories as supporting actors in your grand holiday outfit.

The famous Lady Gaga once said, “And now, I’m just trying to change the world, one sequin at a time.” The next time you have have a holiday party to attend, try something different. Maybe think twice about breaking out your classic little black dress…unless it’s covered in sequins 😉
